About the Comics

One day a violin student asked me, "If you count rhythms the same way in 2/4 time and in 4/4 time, then a song would sound the same in both time signatures!  Why bother having both?"

Not a bad question for a 10-year-old.  I always have to admire a student who asks a question that I have never bothered to ask.

I'm sure that other experienced musicians will be able to come up with a more nuanced response to this student's question, but I had to admit in that moment that I didn't have a good answer.  However, it did set my imagination to work, and I began to imagine what might happen if the time signatures were living things.  Why might different time signatures lead different pieces of music?  One might imagine any number of scenarios, but in the interest of a good plot (and keeping my young students entertained), I chose an epic saga of political conflict, kidnapping, and other intrigues.  It turned out to be incredibly fun to create those stories as well as the visual art for my students, and it led to some of my favorite teaching memories!

Someday I hope to turn those lessons into teaching materials that others might find useful, but for now I will entertain myself by using this new medium to create more storylines for my characters.

Enjoy!
